Activities in Motovun

With its impressive architectural and cultural legacy, favourable climate and the best preserved Istrian fortress that oozes an exceptional appeal, Motovun is an authentic tourist destination that offers a wide range of options and activities for a pleasant and eventful holiday in a unique and unspoilt setting. In addition to being a true paradise for gourmands, wine aficionados and those who like to explore heritage sites, Motovun is a great choice for all nature and adventure lovers.
Cycling and walking trails – the best way to explore the stunning Motovun landscapes and numerous natural landmarks is to hop on a bike or take a stroll down the impeccably marked mountain bike and walking trails.
Just like the Veli Jože, Voćni put and Stara Ferata mountain bike trails, the walking trails Motovun–Zamask and Zamask–Motovun are perfect for exploring the entire municipality and beyond. The legendary Parenzana trail, the former narrow-gauge railway that connected Trieste and Poreč, is an absolute must. It once passed just beneath Motovun, and you can still see the old train station there. The 123-kilometre long route opened in 1902 and featured eleven bridges, six viaducts and nine tunnels. The 222-metre-long tunnel beneath Motovun is the longest one on the Istrian side. The railway closed down in 1935 and was disassembled somewhat later.
Truffle hunting – a growingly popular tourism product that offers first-hand truffle hunting experience of a forest search with hunters and their dogs. And the best thing of all is that you get to revel in a dish made of the truffles you have found. Truffle hunting adventures can be arranged with Miro Tartufi, Sviličić Truffles and Tartufi Istra.
Antico printing house
Named after the famous publisher, composer and music printer Andrea Antico who was born in Motovun in the late 15th century, the Antico printing house has found its place on the town’s main square. Here you can buy truly authentic memorabilia: when printing a unique souvenir on a replica of a medieval Gutenberg printing press, hand-made paper containing some of the fallen leaves from the Motovun Forest is used.
Kaštel Cultural and Educational Centre
The Centre is located within the Kaštel Hotel in Motovun. Its permanent display titled ‘Motovun: History in Motion’ offers visitors an insight into the impressive history of Motovun and its surroundings. You will learn about the flora and fauna of the Motovun Forest, the narrow-gauge Parenzana railway, the popular Motovun Film Festival, the life of the legendary Mario Andretti, etc.
Paragliding – adrenaline seekers will be thrilled with the option of soaring into the sky and enjoying the view of the picturesque town of Motovun. The airfield in Motovun was developed in 2012, and if you’re willing to embark on this unforgettable adventure, it can be easily arranged with the Paragliding Tandem Istra team that organises tandem flights.
