ITF GMP CUP Umag, a big open championship for veterans, will be held in the westernmost Croatian town in late May.
This is an elite tournament of the so called grade 1, gathering 380 male and female players from 24 countries. The contests will be organized in several age-categories and the brilliant moves of tennis veterans will fire up the attractive courts of the tourist town of Umag.
ITF GMP CUP is one of the most important grade 1 tournaments worldwide, gaining that status by an extraordinary decision of the ITF in 2010. Last year it was held in Umag for the sixth time, gathering around 400 competitors from over 20 countries, including 9 world champions in different veteran categories and numerous former Grand Slam participants, largely the names that wrote the pages of tennis history.
Umag was assigned to be the host town due to years of successful organization of the ATP tournament and also other tennis contests.
With the return of GMP CUP to Umag, Northwestern Istria has received another significant recognition as a center of sport tourism and the host-town reaffirmed itself as one of the top tennis spectacle destinations.
